At Bead & Shotblasting Ltd we have been removing paint, body filler, underseal etc from car body shells, chassis, doors, bonnets, wings etc. by baking in our temperature controlled thermal oven since 1997.  The "tight" internal oven size is 4.25 metres long by 2.2 metres wide by 1.75 metres high.

After the baking process we blast clean with fine aluminium oxide to remove the ash and rust so that everything will be cleaned to bare white metal, providing the ideal base for the complete restoration of the car.

Before it comes to us the car must be a bare body shell with all glass, wiring, wood, plastic upholstery etc  removed from the car. Doors, bonnet and boot should also be removed. These can be processed separately.

The car will be thoroughly checked by our staff to ensure the suitability for our process. The body shell and parts are then loaded into our controlled thermal oven which then heats up to a set programme preventing rapid heating or cooling in order to prevent distortion, turning all paint, coatings and body filler to a fine ash.

Important. This method of removing the paint is completely "dry". There is no acid or water used in our process which could remain trapped in seams or box section. 

The body and chassis of a 1927 vintage car which are are now ready to be placed separately in our controlled thermal oven. The oven is fully programmable and we can therefore process parts without distortion.

Following the 12 hour baking off process all the volatiles in the paint have been removed and passed through the oven's after burner and released as an inert gas, leaving a fine ash on the surface of the car.

The body and chassis will then be lightly blastcleaned at low air pressure with a very fine aluminium oxide to remove the paint ash and to blast the rust away. The fine abrasive used for blastcleaning at low air pressure to remove the light ash means that there will be no distortion to thin body panels. Removing paint and coatings which have not been baked to ash would require blastcleaning with heavier blasting abrasives at higher air pressure and could lead to distortion and damage.

Once all the ash and rust has been blast cleaned away it is possible, for the first time, to really see the condition of the stripped metal and the work that may need to be done! 

Immediately after blastcleaning the chassis receives a coat of grey zinc phosphate weldable blast primer to protect the bare white metal from the elements. If left untreated the metal would soon start to show signs of surface rusting.

 The body has also received a coat of zinc phospate primer and together with the chassis is now ready for the customer to collect.
